A mother cat and 7 kittens wandered to our doorstep last week. Two days later two of the kittens reappeared on their own. With no sign of the mama cat after a day we fed and watered the kittens. After no luck with signs in the neighborhood we found a pet store that agreed to take the kittens for adoption.

The pet store just called as the kittens have a weak positive for feline hiv. Kittens can sero-convert (not test positive) at 4 mos. if it was the mother's milk that is causing the positive.

They won't keep them and suggested I put them back outside.

If you know of anyone who doesn't have other cats or is willing to take in these two yellow tabbies (about 8 weeks), please contact Petland in Dunwoody.

I'm trying to locate anyplace that can rent a fiber-fill insulation blower (like one of these) but also be able to deliver and pick up - Home Depot and Lowes rent them but we'd also have to rent a truck to transport it if we got it from them. Any pointers?

I need a 20' long cat 5/6 network cable - Frys is closed, and I'm pretty sure wal-mart won't carry that long of a cable.

Do the norcross computer stores usually open on Thanksgiving?

I think it’s safe to say that most people aren’t fans of Black Friday – the stress, waking up early, standing in long lines, fighting the crowds, etc. Well, thank goodness for Decatur’s shops. A number of local retailers are offering discounts this Friday (hello Fab Friday!), which means you can actually enjoy your holiday shopping walking along the city’s tree-lined streets, experiencing great customer service, and taking a shopping break at one of the local restaurants.

I’ll continue to add to this list throughout the day. Feel free to leave a comment if I’ve left anything off!

>Whit’s End will be open early on Friday with all leftover summer items just $15 or $9.  Other sales items include frames, golf tees, Docker’s slacks and Patagonia shoes. Columbia upper body wear is 20% off and all other non sale items are 10% off.

>Mingei World Arts has some great new items including hand-made woven products from Burma and Bhutan, more Decatur Banner Bags (tote bags made from vintage City of Decatur banners), recycled hand-made Coleccion Luna bags and Himalayan candles.

>Kaleidoscope Boutique will be open at 9 a.m. on Friday with 25% off all fall clothing. The boutique will be serving complimentary hot mulled wine and cookies while you shop.

>Boogaloos Boutique will open at 9 a.m. with 25% off all full-priced merchandise.

Anybody seen or heard anything about an enormous blaze last night in the Carver Hills neighborhood (or thereabouts)? I saw all the action from my own house, just down the road, but can't find any coverage of it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

So, due to some recent changes in employment, I'm looking for a new primary care physician associated with BlueCross BlueShield of GA, ideally inside the perimeter. I know my wife prefers female PCPs; I don't really have much of a preference. Is there anyone you would recommend?

Thanks!

Federal lawsuit filed against Atlanta police over raid at gay club

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- A federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday against Atlanta police over a September raid at a gay club, on behalf of 19 patrons who say they were forcibly searched and detained.

The suit, filed by the gay-rights group Lambda Legal, names Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington and 48 officers who were at the Atlanta Eagle bar the night of September 10.

"The Atlanta Police Department dispatched about 20 to 30 officers to the Atlanta Eagle, including its 'Red Dog' unit dressed in SWAT team gear," according to a statement from Lambda Legal. "But inside the bar, the APD found no public sex, no drugs or illegal weapons." No patrons were charged with any crime, the organization said.

During the raid, patrons were made to lie face down on the floor while background checks were run on everyone, the statement said. "Eagle bar patrons heard anti-gay slurs; were forced to lay in spilled beer and broken glass; and one was forced to lie on the floor even though he had injured his back in the Iraq War."

Some of the patrons were restrained with handcuffs, and officers used excessive force, including shoving some people to the floor and kicking others on the floor, the lawsuit says. Authorities searched everyone on the property, seizing their driver's licenses or other identification, the suit says.Read more... )

The AJC has a story her about a pawn shop that was selling largely stolen items now retrieved by authorities. Given the many crimes reported, you might want to try and see if any of your sessions are among them.

Sooo my near-inlaws are coming here for Thanksgiving. Because my place is equal parts tiny and messy, we're putting them up at a hotel near Emory and getting Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant.

And it just occurred to me to wonder ... where can we find breakfast? I'm sure my standbys -- Gato Bizco and Java Jive -- will be closed. Will anything else be open? Or do I need to experiment with frozen Belgian waffles and a toaster oven? I'd probably love the scene at Waffle House on Thanksgiving morning, but I can't see the boy's parents digging it much.

(freaking out a little)

Sometimes people get ideas and realize they take more work than they anticipated. Other times these idea people make them happen. That’s the result in the case of the the new Decatur Christmas Tree! Krista Gilliam, who works at The Little Shop of Stories, envisioned a tree lighting in downtown Decatur and brought that vision to reality. Krista asked their landlord for permission to place a tree on top of the “Shop”, collected money and support from the businesses, ordered the tree, hired the company to install it, got lights ………you get the picture. Now Decatur will have a “Tree Lighting”!

The “Tree Lighting” will be held on Thursday, December 3rd from 7 until 8 pm. The Glennwood Choral Group will be entertaining with carols, and “sweet treats” will be provided. The tree will be lit at approximately 7:15 pm. Join the community on East Court Square as we gather for the lighting. Then stay in downtown Decatur for some holiday shopping and dining. Remember- it is one of the last three Terrific Thursdays, so a great opportunity to get in some holiday shopping while supporting our local businesses.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the public input meetings for the Cultural Arts Master Plan last week. The large amount of community involvement in the city’s planning processes is what sets Decatur apart from the rest and last week’s meetings were no different. Andrea Berry filmed the public input meeting from Wednesday for eLife Magazine. We had a great turn-out, but for those of you who were unable to make it, take a look:

Update: For those of you who were unable to make it, we would still love your input! Visit the Cultural Arts Open City Hall page and let us know your thoughts.
